Enhanced Data Protection and Disaster Recovery: Veeam Backup to AWS Glacier with CloudEndure Recovery Services

Client:

A dynamic enterprise with critical data and a need for robust data protection and disaster recovery services aimed to implement Veeam Backup to AWS Glacier, coupled with AWS CloudEndure Recovery Services. The primary objective was to ensure reliable archival and data retention services, as well as a comprehensive disaster recovery solution for their environment.

Phase 1: Amazon Web Services Prerequisites

A. AWS Account Setup:

The IT team established an AWS account, ensuring that it met the necessary requirements for securely managing cloud resources.

B. Amazon Network Components Setup:

To provide a secure and scalable network infrastructure, the team configured Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) and subnet components within the AWS environment.

C. S3 Storage Account and Access Credentials:

The IT team created an S3 storage account and set up access credentials, ensuring secure storage capabilities for data backups.

Phase 2: Veeam Backup Configuration to AWS Glacier

A. Connecting Veeam to Amazon S3 Glacier:

The IT team configured Veeam Backup v11 to connect to Amazon S3 Glacier, enabling seamless data backup and archival. Immutable backups were implemented to prevent any accidental data deletion or modification.

B. Backup Configuration Details:

The backup configuration included settings such as the AWS Region (Global) and Data Center (EU) for optimal data storage and compliance with data regulations.

C. Backup Schedule and Retention Period:

Veeam Backup was scheduled to run during out-of-office hours (6 PM M-F) to minimize any impact on production systems. A retention period of 2 years was set to ensure long-term data retention.

D. Backup Data Volume:

With a data volume of 3.3 TB, the IT team ensured that the backup infrastructure had sufficient capacity to accommodate data growth.

E. On-Demand Backup and Testing:

To validate the backup configuration, an on-demand backup was performed, and comprehensive testing was conducted to verify data restorability and reliability.

Phase 3: AWS CloudEndure Recovery Services

A. Recovery Services Configuration:

The IT team set up AWS CloudEndure Recovery Services, a comprehensive disaster recovery solution, to ensure business continuity in case of any critical incidents.

B. Replication of VMs and Physical Servers:

CloudEndure enabled replication across 9 virtual machines and 2 physical servers, creating replicas in AWS for near-instant recovery capabilities.

C. Recovery Plans Setup:

To establish recovery objectives, recovery plans were created, with a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of 24 hours and a Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of 24 hours.

D. CloudEndure DR Drill Validation:

The team conducted a DR drill to validate the effectiveness of the disaster recovery solution. This drill ensured that the recovery process was efficient and could meet the organization’s requirements for rapid data restoration.

Conclusion:

By implementing Veeam Backup to AWS Glacier and AWS CloudEndure Recovery Services, the dynamic enterprise achieved enhanced data protection, data retention, and disaster recovery capabilities. The seamless integration between Veeam and AWS Glacier allowed the organization to securely store critical data for a retention period of 2 years. In combination with CloudEndure Recovery Services, the organization established robust disaster recovery plans with a 24-hour RPO and RTO, ensuring business continuity in the event of any unforeseen incidents. The implementation of this comprehensive solution provided the organization with the confidence and peace of mind to focus on their core business activities, knowing that their data was safeguarded and that they had reliable recovery mechanisms in place to face any challenges effectively.
